Golden Gate Estates runs on well water, and well water is the main problem on the glass. The irrigation here is high in iron and calcium, so sprinklers leave orange and white spotting on the lower panes that bakes on in the sun and will not come off with a hose. On acreage lots the sprinklers often reach windows on more than one side of the house.
The rest comes from the land. Slash pines and cabbage palms drop pollen from February through April, the unpaved side streets off Everglades and DeSoto boulevards put a layer of lime-rock dust on everything in the dry season, and smoke from spring brush fires settles on the glass as a gray haze. Golden Gate City, with its canals and smaller lots, gets the pollen and sprinkler spots without the dust, and the newer communities off Collier Boulevard add construction dust while the neighbors are still building.
